Nivea dark spot reduction cream

Nivea dark spot reduction cream is a moisturizer with SPF which means it acts both as a sunscreen as well as a moisturizer.

Claims

  • It claims to repair damaged dull skin
  • reduce dark spots
  • intensively moisturise and protect the skin.
  • Suitable for all skin types

Now let’s review these claims one by one

Does Nivea dark spot moisturiser repair my damaged, dull skin?

Our skin appears dull due to a rough surface which is less able to reflect light than compared to a smooth surface. A smooth surface makes our skin look radiant. The skin appears dull due to the buildup of dead cells on the surface of the skin. This moisturiser contains emulsifying ingredients which help in smoothing the surface of the skin.

Does Nivea dark spot reduction moisturiser reduce dark spots?

It contains some skin lightening ingredients but they are far down in the list, so they are unlikely to cause a significant impact on dark spots.

Does Nivea spot reduction cream intensively moisturise and protect the skin?

Moisturising ingredients are far below the ingredient list which means they are used in less amount on top of that this moisturiser contains many skin sensitising and irritating ingredients that can damage the protective skin barrier.

Is Nivea dark spot reduction moisturiser suitable for all skin types?

The answer is no because it contains skin sensitising and pore-clogging ingredients so it is not suitable for sensitive and oily skin types. It contains Silicones that hold sweat and sebum on the skin’s surface which can lead to clogged pores. Another ingredient denatured alcohol promotes skin dryness. Drying out oily skin disturbs the skin’s natural process of shedding dead skin cells. This causes dead cells to pile on the skin surface clogging pores which lead to acne.

Are there any side effects of using Nivea dark spot reduction

The moisturiser contains some endocrine disruptor ingredients, an endocrine disruptor can decrease or increase normal hormone levels, mimic the body’s natural hormones, or alter the natural production of hormones. We also found ingredients that might cause an allergic reaction, and skin irritation in some individuals. It also contains parabens which have developed a bad reputation in the skincare community.

overall I would give Nivea dark spot reduction moisturiser 2/5.

How to use Nivea dark spot reduction cream?

After washing your face with a cleanser you can apply this moisturiser. Moisturiser with SPF should generally be used with standalone sunscreens because even though it says SPF 30 the amount you put on your face will not be enough to get that much coverage, and it will be diluted out by the moisturising ingredients. Also, sunscreens are supposed to be reapplied throughout the day which you might not like to do with your moisturiser.

Ingredient analysis

key ingredients

Homosalate – It’s an organic UV filter widely used in sunscreens. Homosalate has been found to penetrate the skin, disrupt hormones and produce toxic breakdown byproducts over time. It was found unsafe at concentrations up to 10% by the European Commission and they recommended a maximum concentration of 1.4%. In India maximum, authorised concentration for homosalate is 10%.

Cyclomethicone – It helps in retaining skin moisture and delivers active ingredients to the skin. If you have sensitive skin, we have to be mindful of the other ingredients in the product that may irritate our skin, such as fragrance, because the Cyclomethicone will deliver these ingredients to the skin.

Ethylhexyl salicylate – It’s a sunscreen filter.

Alcohol denat – It can cause skin dryness, and disturb the skin barrier. Some studies suggest that it might cause breakouts, skin irritation, and redness.

Glycerin – It’s widely used as a hydrating agent. It contributes to barrier repair of the skin. Oily skin types might not like the sticky feel of the ingredient.

Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane – also called avobenzone – offers protection from UVA rays. Studies have found that it can disrupt the endocrine system and has been shown to block the effects of testosterone in cellular studies(klopcic 2017).

Octocrylene – It’s a UV filter that protects skin from damage caused by the sun.

Phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid – It protects from UVB rays of the sun.

Methyl Methacrylate cross polymer – It gives an elegant silky texture to the product, they are also used to scatter light to reduce the look of fine lines on the skin, as well as to absorb excess oil and give a matte finish.

Panthenol – It moisturises the skin. It confers soothing effects to formulations for the treatment of sunburn and other types of burn.

Glyceryl glucoside – It increases skin elasticity, and moisturising, and reduces the symptoms like itching, burning, tightness, tingling, and feeling of dryness.

4-butylresorcinol – It’s a skin lightener.

Glycyrrhiza glabra root extract – It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and skin whitening properties.

Tocopheryl acetate – It’s an antioxidant and skin conditioning agent.

Sodium ascorbyl phosphate – It has antioxidants, it works to combat the effects of UV damage by fighting free radicals that lead to sign ageing caused by sun exposure.

Panax ginseng root extract – This extract delivers numerous antioxidant compounds and is a decent source of vitamin B. It boosts skin hydration, diminishes rough texture, and helps fade uneven skin tone.

Ginkgo biloba leaf extract – Ginkgo leaf extract exerts many skin benefits, such as powerful antioxidant protection, skin-soothing effects, and skin-soothing by reducing inflammation and reducing signs of ageing.

Propylene glycol – Although it is generally safe it might cause allergic reactions, skin irritation and rashes in some people. Those with eczema might be more susceptible to this ingredient.

Sorbitan isostearate – This ingredient is considered comedogenic i.e., it can clog pores which might cause breakouts and acne.

Trisodium EDTA – Generally used as a preservative and penetration enhancer in skincare products, it can cause irritation in some people.

Perfume – Folks with inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, acne, or rosacea may see their condition worsen with fragranced products.

cI77891 – Also known as titanium dioxide classified as safe by FDA. Although it is known as a possible cancer-causing ingredient when inhaled due to this reason, powdered or spray formulations containing titanium dioxide are of concern.

my opinion on Nivea dark spot reduction

Nivea dark spot reduction has a creamy texture, it easily spreads on the face. after applying it when a few minutes have the face feels really oily, which is a big turn off for oily skin types and the moisturiser already contains so many comedogenic and skin sensitizing ingredients so it is not suitable for oily as well as sensitive skin individuals. this is a moisturiser as well as a sunscreen but you will still need to apply sunscreen over Nivea dark spot reduction because the moisturiser sunscreen combo alone does not work as efficient sunscreens.
